January. A time for new year’s resolutions, reflection, and recovering from the classic festive overindulgence. Whether you’re jumping on the latest diet craze, vowing to embark on a new fitness journey, or taking part in dry January — it’s clear that this month represents, for many, an opportunity for change.

Did you know? Nearly two-thirds of people would pick a different career path, if they could choose again.

On average in the UK, we will spend a massive 3,507 days of our lives at work.* Yet according to a new survey by Get Into Teaching, 64% of people would pick a different career path if they could choose again, with 53% saying they would probably or definitely change their existing occupation if they felt able to.

So why do so many of us dream of changing career?

1. Fulfilment: 34% said they are looking for a more fulfilling role

2. Wellbeing: 36% want a career they enjoy while staying happy and healthy

3. Stability: 35% said they are looking for a more stable income/better paid role

We naturally search for meaning in the things we do, looking for a rewarding career that enables us to feel and see the difference we are making. So it makes sense that more than two-fifths of people surveyed believed they would make a good teacher.

64% of people said they were grateful to a teacher or teachers for the impact they had in shaping the person they are today. Teaching is memorable, giving those who choose to pursue it an opportunity to really make a difference in the lives of young people.

It’s never too late to make the switch

The fear of studying again, starting from scratch or fearing the unknown can prevent people from taking that initial step and making a change. But it is possible and it’s never too late!

Lisa Frost, a chemistry and science teacher at St. Anthony’s Girls’ Catholic Academy in Sunderland, decided to switch into teaching in January 2017 after working as an academic researcher.

“The transition into teaching was fine and there was loads of support available, which was great and helped to alleviate any apprehension about the unknown. I am fairly new to teaching but it surprises, challenges and makes me feel proud, every day.”

So if you’re thinking about a new career this January, and teaching has piqued your interest, know that you are not alone! For more information about teaching as a career and to receive advice and support, visit our website or call the Get Into Teaching line on 0800 389 2500.
