How to perfect your personal statement
Our Teacher Training Adviser (TTA) service is a free service that provides you with tailored, one-to-one support from an experienced teacher throughout the application process.
Hannah applied for teacher training last year. Here she talks about her experience of working with a Teacher Training Adviser and how it helped her to write a successful personal statement.
“I hate filling out forms and the UCAS form was no exception. My TTA John Luxton helped me smoothly through the application process and his support was invaluable.
It had been 21 years since I had done any substantial maths (at University) so I was unsure of whether I was ready to become a teacher this year. However, with John’s helping hand, there were no obstacles to delay me or allow me the chance to procrastinate. Just knowing there was someone knowledgeable I could call on for advice was reassuring and I felt valued as a potential teacher training candidate.
A few weeks in our local school as a Cover Supervisor convinced me that teaching was the right fit for me and my family right now and once I was ready to apply, John sent me detailed emails on several topics that I needed for the application including step-by-step guidance for my personal statement.
John gave me some great feedback on my personal statement: which areas needed more work and which areas I could lose. We batted back 3 or 4 versions before we were both happy.
Together we must have been doing something right because I had an interview appointment at my chosen SCITT within 30 minutes of me pressing submit.”
